Utah Teachers Marilyn Hulme and Sarah Kohrman
Win the Golden Apple Award
Christensen & Hymas Gives $100 Gift Card For Classroom Supplies
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DRAPER, UT, Sept. 6, 2012 – The School Supplies Gift Program, sponsored by Utah-based Christensen & Hymas, is pleased to announce that Mrs. Marilyn Hulme, a 1st grade teacher at Cedar Ridge Elementary School, and Mrs. Sarah Kohrman, a 7th-8th grade science teacher at Indian Hills Middle School, are the next recipients of the Golden Apple Award.
Mrs. Marilyn Hulme moved from California where she taught kindergarten for several years and has been teaching 1st grade in the Alpine School District for the past five. She is a fortunate grandmother who has had the opportunity to teach three of her own grandchildren, which she describes as “one of the joys of teaching.” Another joy she describes is that of witnessing a child learn. She says, “It is very fulfilling to see a child learn. It is especially exciting to see a child learn to read. I know that any knowledge I can help a child acquire will change his/her life. I love teaching a child at the beginning level. It is so important to lay a strong foundation, and that is what a 1st grade teacher does.”
In order to aid her students’ learning, she uses the principle of ‘doing’ in her teaching. This simply means she uses activities in class that demonstrate what the text only explains. When learning about a spider, she says it is “more fun to put on 8 fake legs and 8 phony eyes and play like being a spider than just sitting and reading about what a spider does.” On the other hand, she is a “product of traditional methods of learning,” which means she expects students to exhibit self control when order and calmness are needed. We at Christensen & Hymas thank her for a job well done, and applaud her efforts and her balanced teaching methods.
Mrs. Sarah Kohrman is in her 5th year of teaching at Indian Hills Middle School in Draper, UT. She has taught integrated science and regular biology to both 7th and 8th grade students. She loves teaching, especially when she recognizes a student’s cognition of something she teaches. She says, “I love that moment when the lights go on in a student’s head, when they finally understand a difficult concept. I love it when students are so excited about the material they’re learning that the class erupts into an engaging discussion filled with analytical thinking and interesting questions… I love it when students walk out of the room at the end of the period talking about what we did in class that day. ”
Mrs. Kohrman is also a fun-loving teacher with a knack for laughs and amusement. She says, “I love it when they laugh at my nerdy science jokes!” Beyond the jokes, she will often perform on her guitar before the class, musical numbers called, “Mrs. Kohrman’s original science songs.” But this fun-loving teacher means business when it comes to school science fairs, which she runs. She pushes her students to excel. Most of her students go on to the district fair and then to the regional fair, oftentimes bringing home various prizes. The staff at Christensen & Hymas lauds Mrs. Kohrman’s assiduousness, drive, and ability to be a loving and lovable teacher.
