The lawyers at Christensen & Hymas recently recovered $975,000.00 for a man who lost his wife in a car accident. He and his wife were both seriously injured when a man, influenced by drugs, crossed the median on the highway, and smashed into their car, causing it to spin into a semi-truck’s path. His wife died on the scene; he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Christensen & Hymas stress the importance of car insurance; without it, hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills and related costs would have been left for him to pay.
Due to the complex nature of this accident, negotiations between Christensen & Hymas and three separate car insurance agencies were necessary; all three agencies agreed to settle outside of court. The settlement distribution document states that the insurance policy limits were maxed out for each insurance company involved, including: the at-fault driver’s car insurance, the car insurance insuring the vehicle in the accident, and the client’s car insurance. The at-fault driver’s insurance policy limit was so low, that not even half of the medical bills incurred would have been paid for. Fortunately, the policy limit of the insurance covering the car in the accident was higher, yet was still insufficient. It was the underinsured motorist insurance (UIM) of the client that had the highest policy limit and yielded the highest return, thus protecting him and his family from financial ruin.
Underinsured/uninsured motorist insurance coverage (UIM/UM ) is car insurance that covers the costs incurred from injuries sustained in an auto accident attributed to the fault of another motorist who is either underinsured or uninsured. The coverage may pay for not only medical bills incurred, but lost wages and pain and suffering. This type of coverage is separate and apart from a common policy and is added to, not included within, the original. There are some states that require it, but most do not.
Ken Christensen, personal injury attorney from Christensen & Hymas, strongly recommends obtaining “the best possible insurance you can afford.” In the accident above, it is what ultimately paid for the loss of life and love of the man’s wife, pain and suffering, medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, etc. “It’s just the smart thing to do to protect your family.”
