Did You Know?

Despite the high volume of TV ads promoting testosterone supplements, receiving treatment for low testosterone is not as simple and straightforward as it may seem. First, it is difficult to determine if low testosterone is the symptom of a larger problem or the sole cause of your current symptoms. Second, once the aforementioned has been determined, testosterone regimens risk causing more harm than good. A recent study found in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) states that men who are currently receiving testosterone therapy show increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Nine thousand men around the age of 60 (each of whom had survived coronary angiography and been diagnosed with low testosterone) participated in the study. The results are as follows:

  • 15% of the men began testosterone therapy
  • 26% of the men who began testosterone therapy suffered a heart attack or stroke or died from another cause over a three year span.
  • The previous percentage (26%) was 30% higher than for men who did not begin testosterone therapy, but who also suffered a heart attack or stroke or died from another cause over a three year span.

Safety Alert from the FDA

Due to the results of the above study which was published in the JAMA, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) announced in January 2014 that it would reevaluate the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from the testosterone products that are currently on the market. This announcement came in conjunction with a study from PLOS ONE. The study showed that testosterone therapy for men over 65 doubled their risk of heart attack. For men under 65 with pre-existing heart disease, therapy tripled the risk of heart complications.

Who Qualifies for Low Testosterone Therapy?

The FDA has approved testosterone products for Men who have been diagnosed with low testosterone and who have an associated medical condition.

  • Conditions may include a failure of the testicles to produce testosterone (due to genetic problems, poisoning from chemotherapy, or some other medical condition), brain structure problems, or complications with the hypothalamus or pituitary gland (both of which control the production of testosterone).

However, the FDA has yet to approve testosterone products for men who do not have an associated medical condition to go along with a diagnosis of low testosterone levels.

Don’t Trust the Commercials

The recent advertising campaigns for “Low T” products have led from a total of 5.3 million testosterone products in 2006, to an estimated 13.8 million products in 2011. The commercials say that testosterone products fix almost everything associated with aging in males: less energy, sagging muscles, decreased motivation, and sadness. This “fix-all” selling strategy has led almost 4% of men in their 60s to try testosterone products. However, most of the time, an increase in testosterone is not the answer. Most of these problems can be fixed with a vacation and regular exercise. Now, we are not arguing for or against testosterone products, but we do want you to be mindful of the consequences that are associated with testosterone therapy. The following video goes in greater detail on some of the causes of low testosterone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xrU7HREfcU If you have encountered health problems as a result of testosterone therapy supplements and products, please feel free to ask us for advice on how to move forward.
