Whistleblower Statistics

A whistleblower is someone who informs to a higher authority of a person or organization engaged in an illicit activity or misconduct. Many times the whistleblower is part of a company that is involved in medical malpractice, fraud, or acts against the government.  The following is a list of statistics for those filing whistleblower claims since 2005 to the present, area of complaints, and types of categories in which whistleblowers complain.

Whistleblower Claims:

The following is a list of claims OSHA has received from whistleblowers.  All of these statistics are available through

  • In 2005 there were 1902 filed cases through OSHA.  Of these cases, 1,270 were dismissed while only 41 cases were merited,  and 356 cases were settled.
  • So far in 2013, nearly 2,388 cases have been filed through quarter one and quarter three.  Total cases dismissed is 1,191 while the total number of cases merited is 51 and cases settled amounts to 640.
  • In total from 2005 to 2013 there has been  18,915 cases filed.  Total cases dismissed totals more than 11,400 with 349 receiving merit and 4,184 settled.

A graphical representation of the number of cases generally shows from 2005 to 2013 there has been less cases dismissed and more claims settled or handled privately. Additionally, many more cases have been withdrawn from year to year. It is no surprise that whistleblower statistics have increased as more an more people have started to shirk responsibility within their company and in general. More and more agencies are trying to defraud the government and get money that they are not entitled to. To incentivise individuals who know about a fraudulent act and bring it to light, the government has set up a way to reimburse individuals who report these actions. In 2012 the SEC reported:

  • Cases in 2012 were awarded 10 to 30 percent compensation
  • Nearly 143 cases with a judgement over 1 million were rewarded compensation.
