You may not know that today, January 10th, is Houseplant Appreciation Day. This post takes a look at some common houseplants, and the hidden dangers they may pose to both adults and children. At Good Guys Injury Law, we represent accident victims in personal injury cases, and we are often amazed at the seemingly unexpected situations that lead to accidents. It is important to be aware of any safety risks in our homes — including dangerous plants.

Common Types of Dangerous Plants

Plants that may seem harmless can quickly become accident causes, especially if children are playing around them. We all know that plants like poison ivy are dangerous, but not many people keep poison ivy in their homes. What types of houseplants can be harmful? Below are some examples:

  • Lily

Lilies are some of the prettiest flowers around, but they can also cause a lot of discomforts if ingested. Some forms, like the lily of the valley and the gloriosa lily, are particularly dangerous and can even be fatal when eaten.

  • Philodendron

This leafy green plant is one of the most commonly used houseplants. It is a nice, subtle addition of greenery to any room, but also can be toxic. Children and pets who eat philodendron may experience burning sensations and swelling of the mouth and throat, as well as diarrhea.

  • Ivy

We mentioned poison ivy above, but it is actually not the only type of ivy that can be dangerous. English ivy, which many people use as an air-purifying houseplant, can cause rashes and fever if eaten.

These potentially dangerous plants are usually completely safe in a home. As long as they are out of the reach of curious children and pets, you should not have a problem. However, it is important to understand that they are capable of harm.
