Utah Hospital Safety Rankings: Which Ones Missed the Mark?
The eight hospitals cited by the federal government are listed below.

- LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City
- Salt Lake Regional Medical Center in Salt Lake City
- Cache Valley Hospital in Logan
- McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden
- Castleview Hospital in Price
- Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele
Why Were the Hospitals Cited?
The government’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services evaluated quality statistics such as infection numbers. These included incidents from surgical site infections to catheter-related infections. They compared the number of infections reported at the hospitals to predictions by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDS-based predictions on a hospital’s size, amount of procedures, and types of conditions. The government also considered data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
The Utah hospitals listed above had infection numbers and other problems that exceeded CDC predictions. For example, Intermountain Medical Center performed 306 hysterectomies in 2016. 12 of the patients got surgical site infections. The CDC estimated that there would only be 5 surgical site infections.
