September’s Supplies for Success teaching award spotlighted an incredible speech pathologist, Ms. Karren. She has been at Columbia Elementary for 2 years, and a speech-language pathologist for over 30 years. Speech therapy takes a lot of hard work, patience and persistence from both the student and the teacher. To her students to achieve their goals, Ms. Karren uses encouraging activities, games and rewards. Her students particularly love the ‘treasure chest’, which is full of rewards that are purchased on Ms. Karren’s dollar. Although she works at an elementary school, her job is much different than a typical teacher.

What is a Speech-Language Pathologist?
Speech-language pathologists work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech-language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. They are highly-educated professionals who have a minimum of a master’s degree in their field. They are required to study anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy, genetics, human and language development, linguistics, psychology, acoustics and more. This is why they are qualified to evaluate, diagnose and treat a broad range of delays and disorders.
