The personal injury attorneys at Good Guys Injury Law recently recovered $50,000.00 for a client who had injured her spine in a car accident caused by someone else.  The woman thought the accident was minor until the pain in her neck and back persisted.  Utah attorney Russ Hymas urges every motor-vehicle-accident-victim to seek both medical and legal help, even if the incident was thought to be minor; your physical and financial security could depend on it.

According to the police report, the woman was on her way to work when the incident occurred.  It was early morning and the sun had not quite come up yet.  As she stopped at an intersection, she looked both left and right to see if the road was clear; to the best of her knowledge, it was, so she pulled out into the street.  Little did she know that there was an oncoming car with no lights on.  In the early morning darkness, the oncoming car was unseen.  According to medical records, this simple yet significant mistake on the part of the motorist in the oncoming car cost the woman her present and future health.

The impact from the oncoming car was substantial, yet both individuals involved in the accident appeared to be fine.  Although there was extensive damage to both vehicles, there were no immediate bodily injuries. That is, until pain in the woman’s neck and spine grew considerably worse.  According to the medical records, the pain was severe enough to necessitate seeing medical specialists, who later diagnosed her with a sprained and dislocated neck and spine. As the medical visits continued, the associated costs amassed, which resulted in financially crippling medical bills.

Utah personal injury attorney Russ Hymas says that neck and spine injuries are very serious; they can alter a person’s life dramatically, both physically and financially.  They can happen to anyone, especially with how often they can occur in common and routine activities of everyday life.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that motor vehicle crashes account for 46% of reported spinal cord injuries (SCI); sports are said to be 12% at fault; falls 22%; and violence 16%.

The CDC further stated that the average annual medical cost for a SCI is between $15,000 and $30,000 per year; the estimated lifetime cost of a SCI can be between $500,000 and more than $3 million, depending on the severity of the injury.  These costs easily amount to more than some individuals earn in a year or even a lifetime.

If the costs do not adversely impact the victim’s life, the altered physical condition may.  It has been shown that a spine injury alters the victim’s posture and ability to hold themselves up properly, which can have devastating physiological effects.  According to the American Journal of Pain Management,

“Posture affects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to hormone production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.”

Personal injury lawyer Russ Hymas urges every motor-vehicle-accident victim to seek medical help, even if the incident was thought to be minor and no physical injury is readily apparent.  Adrenaline can overpower the senses and mask the pain of an injury.  Allow a medical professional to determine if a serious physical injury has occurred.  Also, be sure to understand your legal rights.  By personally speaking with a personal injury lawyer, you will gain valuable information that could save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills and associated costs.  Both a medical and legal professional can help you.  Be sure to call them; your physical health and financial security could depend on it.
