What to Look Out For
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has outlined some important things to look for as a witness or victim of a hit-and-run. Noting this information can help police catch the person responsible. It can also help you when you try to make a car insurance claim.
Here are some important things to note:
- Information about the car: Try to remember any details about the car that you saw hit something/someone. Whether that’s the make/model of the car, the license plate number, or the color of the vehicle.
- Take notes for the victim: This is important if you witness a parked car get hit or in situations when the victim might be injured. Noting the time and location that the accident happened can be crucial.
- Try and snap a picture: With cameras on smartphones and tablets, it’s easy to snag a picture of the vehicle. This can be a great help for police later.
- Leave your contact information: It’s important that the victim and the police can contact you about what you saw. Be sure to leave your name, number, email, and any other way you can be reached in case they need more information.
